Obstacles to healthy habits: I got 'em. Meet obstacle #1, my dog Osita.
With a packed work schedule, early morning is my only opportunity to fit in exercise. Coincidentally, early morning happens to be Osita's favorite time to snuggle. So I have the choice of A. Get out of warm bed and go out into the cold, pitch black morning to run or go to the gym, or B. Stay in warm bed with warm snuggly dog.
Obstacle #2 of about a zillion obstacles to healthy living is my busy schedule. I frequently meet with clients in the early evening to accommodate their schedules, which can mean coming home at or after 8pm. Who feels like cooking a healthy meal at 8pm?
It's been my experience that my clients who achieve their goals do so not because they never encounter any obstacles. To the contrary, they face plenty of obstacles--from ingrained bad habits to unsupportive family members, to lack of time, lack of energy and simple lack of know-how. What makes these individuals (and what has made me) successful is...
1. Becoming aware of these obstacles. Acknowledge them, know them well!
2. Laying off the excuses. An obstacle is not an excuse, it's just an obstacle.
3. Hacking away at obstacles bit by bit by planning and making simple, achievable changes.
4. Practice and be consistent! Momentum is a beautiful thing, and once you've got some inertia going, it becomes easier and easier to practice those healthy habits, whether it's morning exercise or building healthful meals in minutes.
Make no mistake: I'm not perfect. Some mornings Osita wins. Sometimes dinner is a little sadder than it should be. But with know-how, planning, practice, and--this one is really important--not giving into easy excuses, I've built healthful habits that I can stick to.
If you feel like the obstacles preventing you from achieving your health & wellness goals are too huge to surmount, let's talk!
