While shopping at a clothing store--a CLOTHING STORE--I was confronted with this display at checkout. Of course, this was one of those checkouts where I was standing for a several minutes in a maze-like formation, moving slowly toward the soda case and rack of candy before getting to the register. Just about every mom in line ahead of me had given in and let the kids choose some candy or a soda.
The location and setup of this display is not a coincidence.
It is designed to create and answer a problem.
Shopping is hectic and stressful, and boy, I sure deserve a treat, and...oh, hey! Here's a case of ice cold soda--ad look! They even have those nostalgic glass bottles! And racks and racks of M&Ms, Goldfish and candy!
While I will never tell a client that they should deprive themselves as a rule, the truth is that we live in a world with WAY too many opportunities for salty, sugary, fatty snacking--far more than our bodies need.
Don't be a chump and fall for this setup. When we carefully choose where and when we treat ourselves, we make more and faster progress toward health and fitness goals.
