In my one-on-one health coaching with clients, we don't attempt to overhaul their entire way of life overnight. I support my clients in making a series of many small changes over a period of weeks and months--and for some, years. It's only when looking back after many months when my clients realize that without even noticing the change happen, they've completely upgraded their way of eating.
With plenty of fresh, local fruit in farmers' markets and grocery stores, summer is an ideal time to make one simple swap that adds up to BIG results in terms of positive health and fitness outcomes: Replace one highly processed snack or drink each day (I'm talking about cookies, chips, sodas, snack cakes, sugary granola bars and flavored yogurts) with fresh fruit!
"But Lauren!," some of you are thinking, "isn't fruit full of...SUGAR?!"
Only looking at the sugar content of fruit and not seeing the full package is like looking at the tail of an elephant and declaring elephants to be long wiry ropes. Swapping in fresh (and fresh frozen) fruit offers tremendous health benefits:
- Fruit provides a source of vitamins and phytonutrients, a fancy word to describe chemicals in plants that protect us from disease and help our bodies work better
- Fresh fruits--especially the dark-colored ones!--also contain antioxidants, a fancy word for chemicals that prevent cell damage
- The sugar in fruit is balanced out by fiber that slows it's absorption in our bodies. Rather than spiking our blood sugar like soda, fruit provides a more gentle rise in blood sugar making it an excellent source of energy
- The natural sweetness of fruit can satisfy our sweet tooth and crowd out candy, soda and other heavily processed sweets.
Fruitis not the enemy of health: Heavily processed packaged foods laced with sugar are the much greater health danger, especially when we consume them several times a week--or even a day--as a habit.
I encourage you to make this simple swap, and stay in touch to let me know how it goes!
